Summer is always busy with kids being home from school, their camps and activities, and of course, your vacation plans. Believe it or not, it’s also our busy time in real estate – many families plan on moving before the school year starts, especially if the move involves a new school district. So, how can you make sure that goes smoothly on top of everything else you’re juggling in summer? Here are our top tips for avoiding chaos and stress when moving before the school year starts:
- If you have the time before your move date, go through the children’s bedrooms and playroom with them and purge before packing. Donate or throw out anything they’ve outgrown or don’t use anymore. Remember that your new home is an opportunity for everyone in the family to start a new chapter, and that usually involves shedding some of the old first!
- Don’t empty their bedroom furniture! You’ll save both time and space by leaving the contents of the dresser drawers just as they are. (Transporting them empty just means you’ve packed those belongings elsewhere.) The same idea applies to their closets – move their clothes straight from the rack on their hangers, and they’ll be ready to hang right back up in the new home. You’ll be glad you did when they’re looking for that special “first-day-outfit.”
- When it comes to packing, you’ll need to be systematic and strategic with what goes where. Make sure that the things kids will need right away are packed together in one box and highlighted with their name so that they can find it as soon as you start unpacking on the other end. Think favorite clothes, toys, pajamas, and school necessities like backpack and books. Your children can open their own box, get settled in their new room a little, and be ready for back-to-school before you worry about the rest of the house.
- Lastly, think about a designated “school” space in your new home – somewhere each child can have his or her own hook, cubby, and study area. You can tell them they’re getting their own “office,” and the dedicated study space will be ideal for homework, projects, and crafts.
