I could probably post this same article every month and it would be helpful to someone! This month it’s Garbage Disposals – we’ve all had the problem when the disposal jams and you’re left with a sink full of cruddy water. This is a relatively easy fix for those who are motivated to get the jam cleared quickly and the sink drained! It’s in the form of a handy little tool that can be found at your local hardware store for probably less than $5.
For the inspired, read this wonderful do-it-yourself site and you’ll be a pro in no time! You can Google more information or even look on YouTube for a how-to video.
In summary, there’s a spot on the BOTTOM of the disposal that you insert the allen/hex wrench into and turn to free a jammed disposal. The reset button is only used after the jam is cleared! Who knew? Saves a lot of time and money doing it yourself!!!
Helpful Hint: Avoid putting potato peels down the garbage disposal. That’s one of the worst jams unless you feed it slowwwwly.
There are 2 key SAFETY points I’d like to make here:
- Make sure you have UNPLUGGED the disposal BEFORE you try to un-jam it. Plug is found under the sink.
- Make sure you have UNPLUGGED the disposal BEFORE you try to reach in with your hand to clear a jam.
Of course IF you can’t do this or if there is a leak in the disposal or you see rust and have a puddle in the cabinet floor underneath, please call us for service!
